Kid Approved: Homemade Tortillas

The kids love eating tortillas and we do too!
We’ve been making these since our firstborn was little. It’s a great way to get them involved in cooking and preparing food. It’s quite easy that as a toddler, he now is able to make it himself. We eat them for tacos and if we have left over (we double this recipe and sometimes we do) we use it for scrambled eggs and cheese wrap for breakfast the next day.

INGREDIENTS

  • 3 cups of flour
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/3 cup oil
  • 1 cup warm water (room temperature is fine)

DIRECTIONS

  1. Mix the dry ingredients (flour, salt, baking powder) together well.
  2. Add the oil and water to #1 and stir until it comes together.
  3. Divide into 12 balls and place on a plate to rest. Cover with a tea towel for 20 minutes. (If you want larger tortillas, adjust accordingly.
  4. When you’re ready, heat your skillet (we use a cast iron) on Medium and while you wait for it to heat, roll out each ball with a rolling pin. Also, prepare a plate with a tea towel on it.
  5. Place the rolled out tortilla on the skillet/cast iron and wait until it adds color on one side, then flip.
  6. Wrap in a tea towel to keep warm as you make the rest.

We use two different recipes. If you have time, I recommend trying this one and the carnitas recipe too!
