2022 Postpartum Picks

03 Oct 2022

I was chatting with someone recently about products that have been helpful postpartum. There are 4 products that I've used for two out of the three postpartum experiences I've had and recommend to all mamas:

  1. Frida Mom Instant Ice Maxi Pads
  2. Frida Mom Upside Down Peri Bottle
  3. Laurier Period Pads Super Guard Shorts
  4. Mama Earth Postpartum Tea

Here's why.

PRODUCT 1: Frida Mom Instant Ice Maxi Pads

When I had my first child, I didn't think about and did not prepare for any type of postpartum care. I had several friends who worked in health care and a kind friend made me homemade ice pads, brought me TUCKS and witch hazel. That's what I used.

For my second birth, my husband purchased several boxes of the Frida Maxi Ice Pads for me. I tried it, and I was absolutely won over. They stayed colder longer, covered a larger area, and sped up the healing process. I purchased it for the third and recent birth and still rave about them. I used around 3 boxes since I changed them every time I peed. You can purchase both Frida products on Amazon, at Target or at BuyBuyBaby.

PRODUCT 2: Frida Mom Upside Down Peri Bottle

For the first birth, I brought back the peri bottle that the hospital gave to me and I was not a fan. It was small, it took some maneuvering to have it aim right and the flow was not great. I found the Frida peri bottles for the second time around, and found the design to be great. I only wished it could be slightly larger in size. For the first birth, I used a peri bottle for quite some time. For the second birth, I used it about a week or so, and for the most recent birth, I only used it for a day. Use will be determined by the type of healing you need, so the duration you'll use it will vary.

PRODUCT 3: Kao Laurier Sanitary Napkin Super Guard Shorts

I have been using Japanese period pads for years and prefer them over the American products. They absorb better and I find them to be much more comfortable against the skin. For the first two births, I did not use any thick pads. I didn't bleed at all for the first; the second I only needed a very thin pad and only for a few days. For this birth, the midwife gave me two Depends and I tried the Frida Mom Postpartum Underwear and I was not a fan of either. They're just uncomfortable, and sitting in a room without AC during the summer, sweating, they make you itchy. Maybe it's because the humidity in Japan is taken into account when they make the Japanese products, but they are much more comfortable in the same conditions. The only down-side of these may be availability and sizing. You can purchase these in an Asian store like H-Mart, Mitsuwa Marketplace or Uwajimaya if you live in the states. You can also purchase it online on Amazon. Again, depending upon the person and the birth, the amount you bleed will be different so you may or may not have use for this postpartum.

PRODUCT 4: Earth Mama postpartum tea

I read that postpartum contractions become more and more intense with each pregnancy so for the second, I decided to purchase this tea. I drank it right after I gave birth and didn't experience any postpartum discomfort. For the third, I did feel the contracting of my muscles but through breathing, relaxing and enjoying this tea, I would say there wasn't any pain. I also enjoy drinking tea in general so for me, it's a postpartum treat that keeps me hydrated! I've iced it after brewing this time so I've enjoyed it both hot and cold.
